ABOUT
GEIST is production company that specializes in breathing life and culture into historic buildings via façade projections. Its name was chosen, in part, because of its semantic association with ghost, spirit, mind, and intellect in its native German language, reflecting on the ephemeral nature of the light, thoughts, and experiences that the company brings with its installations.
We wanted these themes and ideas to come across visually within the design of GEIST's animated logo. The design of the animated logo is stacked with visual artifacts from different moving image media, including spots and film grain from early cell film, CRT pixels from tube televisions, deranged pixel bleed from digital video transmission, along with a whole mess of lens flare, light bleed, haloing, and patterns of stray light from every bygone optical technology we could think of. Each artifact represents not just a supporting technological apparatus, but an entire era of content and ideas, a zeitgeist, or spirit of the times.
What persists through each era, through each media, is the GEIST. Shaped by every preceding year, and scarred with the artifacts of every preceding technology, the GEIST is what remains at the end of time.
